Among the resources available for trans people, there many that address long term needs, such as applying for a name change or protecting your civil rights.
Among the resources available for trans people, there many that address long term needs, such as applying for a name change or protecting your civil rights.
We've noticed, however, that resources for addressing more immediate, day-to-day needs are less common. Trans people often suffer alienation from family and social groups, leaving us without the support we need to learn to do the fundamental tasks of living and functioning in society. We can be afraid sometimes to ask for help out of fear of being misgendered or otherwise treated disrespectfully or outright refused help based on our gender.
The Stay Gold Foundation aims to fill this gap in immediate-need support by providing resources and instruction for such things as filing taxes, traveling, dating while trans, coming out at work, and finding community.
Family Life
-
Transgender people often experience strained family relationships due to parents and other family members’ struggle to understand transgender and accept their loved one’s gender identity. This leads to a lack of support, which is vital for health and well being. Adolescence is such an important period of life for identity development, and gender identity is a key part of that. For those whose felt gender does not align with their assigned gender, this period of development can be especially difficult. Below are some resources for aiding trans youth in this period of time. It’s not only youth that experience lack of acceptance and support from family as they transition. Many of us who transitioned later in life have also felt the pain of alienation from parents and other family members. As adults, we are often better equipped psychologically and financially to cope with this rejection, but can it nevertheless be quite painful and emotionally difficult. Here are some resources for supporting trans adults coping with family issues.

Finances
-
According to transequality.org, 34% of transgender people surveyed in 2022 reported being in poverty, as opposed to 11.5% of the general population (census.gov). Often, transgender people do not learn the basics of personal finance management because the usual paths for gaining such knowledge are unavailable due to factors such as alienation, social stigma, and fear of interaction with public agencies due to misgendering and deadnaming.

Dating
-
Dating can be difficult for anyone, and transgender people are no exception. Aside from the usual difficulties with dating, we are often met with additional challenges related to our gender identity. This can include finding safe and accepting locations to meet someone, knowing which apps are best, and knowing how to communicate our needs to a partner. We’ve put together some resources to help with meeting these challenges.
